Ehhh, I wouldn't qualify ORE ships as faction given that you can straight-up buy BPOs for them, even if you can only get them from ORE vendors. EDIT: Also, the bracket clearly says "barge", implying mining barges and their T2 counterparts.Regardless of the distinction, if he has a hauler (and I think it is based on a conversation with him) that can perma-tank a Skiff, it can pretty much perma-tank any hauler because they'll have less DPS than a Skiff, not more. I'm still dying to see what folks come up with though.
If I end up having to compete in that bracket it may have to be on an alt. Tengu doesn't have any industrial or mining barge skills at all. And I'm not willing to change that. lol

Omar Alharazaad wrote:To be honest, my appreciation for this event has only increased after having only tried once so far. There is a certain 'rock, paper, scissors' aspect to it, but that's how it goes. I learned stuff. Most importantly I learned what mistakes I made and how not to make them again. Pilot error killed me fast. I needed range against Tengu's fit and I failed to go for it immediately. No excuses. I look forward to improving more in the loser's bracket.
I wanted to say something insightful and witty about out battle, but watching the video it's very clear where it went wrong for Omar. The fact was his fit quite likely if not definitely would have beaten me if he had managed to maintain the engagement range he wanted. It would have been on me to out pilot him in order to have a hope of beating him. My fit was such that I was able to capitalize on his mistake with deadly effectiveness.
I would be very interested to repeat that battle in the future and see how it would turn out. I know for a fact it would have at least been a lot closer than it was, or potentially gone in the complete other direction.
He made one critical mistake and it cost him the match. That's Eve though, and it's really what I'm loving about these thunderdomes, making those mistakes and thinking "whelp, not doing that again."

The real reason behind my success isn't that I'm an exceptional pilot, I just seem to be very good at picking ships that my opponent is unlikely to counter. VNI counter: Kitey active rep ship, a bigger brick. Gila counter: Anything that can web/kill drones. Orthrus counter: Damps, tackle, cap warfare. It would have been really interesting to pit my VNI build, which had 3x damps but relied mainly on heavy drones, against my Orthrus build, which was vulnerable to damps but fast enough to outrun heavy drones.
That would be interesting to see. |

Bronson Hughes wrote:So, in the absence of new fights, I've been reviewing some of the past videos and I wanted to provide one piece of after-action commentary. Said commentary is regarding my fight with Tengu. To recap, he was in a Blaster Brutix, and I was in a fast rail Talos. Tengu never got into range, having burnt out his MWD trying to overheat and catch me, and I eventually won. He could have tried to slingshot me, but given the ranges involved, that likely wouldn't have worked. There is one thing Tengu could have done differently that could have changed the outcome: fly away from me. In my fight with Domino, you see Domino warping around on-grid a whole lot. He was burning away from me, knowing that he couldn't catch me, but he was dropping tactical bookmarks to warp to. Twice, he nearly tackled me, and that would have been the end of me. If Tengu had flown in a straight line away from me, dropping tactical bookmarks all the way, I'd have likely ended up in a tail chase and been passing right over said bookmarks. He'd potentially have had a whole string of opportunities to land right on top of me and melt my face in the special kind of way that only a Brutix can do. The range would have been tight; I was trying to stay about 70-80km off and you need 150 to warp, but with some clever piloting and judicious MWD overheating it may have worked. This is one of those tactics that would likely never work in a "real" fight. Outside of Thunderdome, Tengu would have simply warped off, or would have been pointed by someone else while I pelted him from range. But in Thunderdome...the rules of PvP go right out the window.
Didn't think of it, but next time will certainly give it a shot. You might have figured out what I was up to and with your speed advantage, kept up with me while avoiding my trail. If you had misjudged though, it just might have worked. Damn I really want to try that now.

Next thunderdome will have a few new features.
We have approved:
1) A T3D round. All races have them, and they are an incredibly short train (9 days max, I think, to get LVL 4). 2) Hard deadlines for matches to be completed by. One per week, due by downtime on the last day.
We are considering:
1) Timezone-specific matchups for the first few fights. This will allow participants in differing zones to compete with each other before needing to accommodate someone else schedule at 0200 hrs. This will be based on the number of opposing timezone participants we get. Details in the next signup thread.
2) Bans. Each participant will be able to ban one hull type per round.
We welcome your input on the considerations, and, please feel free to ask for something if you think it will help as we attempt to grow the event.
By hull type do you mean say "I ban the Navy Brutix" or do you mean "I ban the Brutix hull" which also is used for the astarte and the regular brutix? Just want to be clear.

Leto Thule wrote:Bronson Hughes wrote: As for individual match bans, those are more about covering gaps in your own build and less about limiting cost. If I want to ban a Gila, it's not because I'm worried about flying an expensive ship, it's because my fit doesn't work well against a Gila. Plus, this will force folks to come up with at least two viable fits.
^ This ^ As in the past, the only restrictions will be on the T2 variants of battleships (because marauders in bastion mode will never die), and no T3 cruisers because of the absolute brick you can make them. We will leave T3D's out of the next round, but honestly, you all need to get them trained. Why? Because they are a blast. The mode switching feature really opens up the possibilities, and even though the jackdaw may have the best-in-class tank, I have seen them melted by heckates up close. I fully plan on implementing them in the coming months.
Maybe have a smaller side thunderdome T3D's only?

Speaking of which, Immortalist and I had our match.
Seeing as I'd made some assumptions about Tengu's skill training that turned out to be false, (why the hell can't he use sensor damps, what was I thinking not training those?) he agreed I could fly my alt, Tyr Sigmundr.
I tried to record it but it kept saying I wasn't playing a game so there was nothing to record. Really not sure what was going on, but regardless, there's no video of the match. Sorry. Maybe it didn't like me having to Eve's open stacked on top of each other? No idea.
As such I'll simply have to tell the tale with my words.
I landed on grid first in my Naga. Immortalist landed on me at about 60km and by the time he stopped moving he was 92km away. I was fairly confident my mircrowarpdrive could keep me away from his potential scram and or webs.
My sensor damps knocked his targeting range down to arms reach. Initially I was manually orbiting him at let my range dip down to 60 km so I could use Antimatter. His shields melted slower than I would have liked, but they melted.
I was surprised to see his range close to 30 km and cursed my poor piloting skills while overheating my micro pushing my speed up to 2500 or so. A cycle or two later I was comfortably back out at 50km and orbitting again.
A second time his range dipped frighteningly quickly and this time he came within 25 km or so. Again I was able to push range back out to where I was comfortable. At this point I didn't like him getting that close to me and just burned straight away from him as he passed %80 structure or so.
This turned out to be a fatal mistake as his battleship microwarpdrive kicked in and he burned straight for me, doubling my top speed. In our discussion after my only saving grace had been his atrocious agility, so my manual orbiting had been keeping me alive up till that point.
On that burn he actually managed to target lock me and apply his scram and web. The gig was up and I melted in seconds. Here's the mail:
https://zkillboard.com/kill/48616988/
gf, it was exciting and really fun. Had he not used the oversized micro I believe I would have won. He did however, and it payed off. Had I anticipated him countering the naga so effectively, I likely would have brought another structure brick brutix, which likely would have won as I'm sure he had to make fitting sacrifices to fit the oversized micro.
It turns out that once in a while rock does beat paper.

Heh, I'm not sure if you noticed but at one time I went right past you from 13km away, and the time right after that one I actually managed to get an overheated web cycle on you. The only problem at that point was my ridiculous speed with which I wasn't able to stop in time and flew too far away again. I was maybe 62% hull when the match was over. Close calls throughout the whole fight.
lol I wasn't watching close enough to see you go right past me, I did see the web land one cycle but wasn't sure how I managed to escape it, too funny that you overshot.
Was a really nail biting fight, even though it wasn't all that long.
Also didn't realize I got you as low as %62. If you hadn't of tackled me when you did you might not have gotten another chance.
I really need to work on my manual piloting skills. Maybe I should put an alt in RvB again...

I jumped into the wrong clone before the match and forgot to check implants. I also left my drugs in Amarr. Unless you end up fighting a near perfect mirror match I'm confident saying other factors will more strongly determine the outcome than implants.
Had I remembered to change my tracking computer to optimal script at the start, some of my early shots might have landed.
Had I overheated my guns earlier (they only had %10 heat damage when I died) I might have won.
While implants would have helped, the difference between +3's and +5's likely wouldn't have mattered too much.
Most of the matches are purely fit wins, so unless the fit requires a particular implant to work, it will rarely be the deciding factor.

On the note of implants, I've not used any full sets either (in my fight with Lan I was trying to get a snake set but turned out to be too poor to afford them all :D)
I think the current Thunderdome rules allow for good competition without draining people's wallets (unless they want to spend lots of isk).
I could bring all T1 ships to thunderdome and still have a good chance of winning if I did my theorycrafting correctly. Even if I didn't win, I would still get precious pvp experience and some good fights.
Thunderdome is like a good road trip where most of the fun is not arriving at your destination, but seeing the sights and doing cool stuff along the way.
Exactly this. Moreover, to date, id be remiss if I didnt point out that MOST of the expensive stuff dies in a fire. My Cyclone T2 fit was a good 110M tops, while Tengu's faction variant cleared 200m. Its all about how, what, and why. Did my implants help? Yeah, probably. Could he have smoked me without them? There is a chance. But there is also a chance he fit a smartbomb for the express purpose of blapping my pod if I died. Risk vs reward people. The core concept of what EVE is suppose to be.
I considered the smart bomb with the spare high slot, but to clear drones not to pod anyone. It actually would have been good in this case as I very likely could have cleared your drones either before they managed to get a jam off, or shortly after, ending it early.
Also it was closer to 280 I think.

I spent a few hours on the eft trying to figure out the best possible fit out of rather many different battleship hulls and found this one to have very few weaknesses. On my part the strategy was to simply hold my range for as long as possible and when caught I would switch to a brawling mode (which I was prepared for as well). Unfortunately the fight never went all the way to that point.
I was prepared for some serious micro management with creating bookmarks around the grid when trying to kite but in the end didn't end up using those since Bronson's mobile micro jump units ended up working as nice beacons for warping around whenever necessary.
Rattlesnake was a strong choice. I agree, it has a lot of strengths, and not many weaknesses.
Well done sirs, entertaining to watch to say the least.
Special thanks to Carlvagio for being a cool bro and financing fun activities.

Its like a big Gila that reps.
It's drones are noticeably less mobile though. I guess that's one thing against it. It's drones are either slow and can be outrun (maybe not by a BS but still) or stationary and have to contend with tracking and fixed optimal.

Personally I'm not in favor of the faction noob ships. The primary reason being the extreme disparity between them and their vanilla counter parts. In every other ship class a vanilla t1 could beat a faction variant through superior piloting, clever tactical decisions, range management etc. With the rookie ships unless the faction pilot screws up in stupendous fashion, he's virtually guaranteed victory.

Fair enough I suppose. Does that make it an iWin button for the person who decides to bring it? Although I'd laugh hysterically for hours if the opponent brought an Ibis and managed to keep it jammed long enough to kill it.

Unfortunately I don't remember the videos well enough and do not have the time to review them in a timely fashion so i'll have to abstain from providing any suggestions.
